Places to go and things to do at Nongsa
BATAM CENTRE
Indonesia's President Soeharto and Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew
each planted a banyan tree on 29 November 1987, marking the close friendship between
the two countries and the beginning of construction on Batam Centre. This area
is the pride of batam, with its upcoming plans for hotels, shops and a marina.
Duty free items are plentiful, you can purchase from the well stocked stores
at the ferry terminal or save a dollar more and shop In Nagoya.' Perfumes, chocolates
and designer bags are also popular items on duty free purchases list. Other good buys
are delicious indonesian snacks, such as prawn-crackers (ko-ro-pok), Spicy fish cake
(otak-otak), dried fish, exotic sweetmeats and rich indonesian coffee. Not forgetting the Genuine indonesian batik imported
from Java. Local handicrafts from all over the archipelago include woodcarvings from Bali,
decorative wooden puppets from West Java, rattan goods and ceramics. Brassware, Lampshades
and more are there for the buying. DON'T FORGET TO HAGGLE / BARGAIN as thats
one of the real thrills, shopping for the best deals!
FOOD ANYONE?
With easy access to the open sea, finding fresh seafood is no problem. Its no wonder
why another of Batam's biggest attractions is the fresh and delicious seafood. Live
king prawns, crabs and fish taken straight from nets out in the sea. Live Lobsters,
clams and shellfishes are cooked in a variety of styles to satisfy anyones taste buds.
All you have to do is take a walk through the 'live' fish tanks then pick and choose
what you would like to have served up on your table. Some local shellfishes that are
a 'MUST TRY'
REZEKI seafood located in Batu Besar is just one of the highly recommended seafood places to go. Ask around and
the local staff and they will show you the way. And to truly make your dining experience
even more enjoyable... there is no need to bother with the cutleries, please feel free
to use your hands!
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF MY PREFERED DISHES!
PLEASE EXCUSE THE POOR QUALITY OF THE PICTURES... I WAS IN A RUSH TO START EATING!

-'Gong-Gong' Best steamed. The shell fish has a succulent meat is fished out with a toothpick
from within the shell and dipped in a spicy sauce (sambal) before eating.
-'La-La' This clam like shell fish is best stir-fried with a light gravy
-Chilli Crab Best Stir-fried with garlic and a sweet chilli ketchup based gravy with
bread on the side to dip with the gravy.
-King Prawns Best steamed with garlic, or simply boiled with brandy so you can taste the sweetness.
You can just eat it plain or lightly dipped in dark soya sauce.
-Fresh Scallops Best steamed with either garlic or a black bean paste... or even BOTH... or stir fried in sambal.
-Fresh Fish Steamed to perfection, with a light soya sauce gravy (cantonese style) or pickled cabbage with a sour plum (teochew style).
The meat is tender, sweet and fresh to the taste with each bite you take. WARNING! DO NOT WASTE TIME, REMEMBER TO EAT IT WHILE ITS IS HOT!...
Please do not limit yourself to just seafood, personally we prefer a 'SEE-food'
diet. We recommend you to eat almost everything you SEE! Of course for the less adventurous (...... such a pity) you can
always drop by the supermarket to do some groceries and then do some home cooking at the
villa.
... ... *Did we mention cheap beer and alcohol as well?
SPORTS AND LEISURE

the beach of Nongsa to a full golf course at the very attractive Talvas Golf and Country Club
All kinds of water sports are available even stretching to offshore scuba diving at the nearby
reefs and islands. Wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing and sailing are popular
pastimes available at the water sports center located at Turi Beach Resort about 10-15
mins walk from the villa compound. Other activities there include a traditional style massage
at the spa.
